Tottenham's Bentancur unconscious
Violent collision shocks Premier League professionals
Deep in the second half of the Premier League game between Tottenham Hotspur and Leicester there was a violent crash: two players banged their heads together and Tottenham professional Rodrigo Bentancur was knocked out. After worrying minutes, there is a very cautious all-clear.
A violent collision briefly knocked football professional Rodrigo Bentancur unconscious and caused consternation in the Premier League game between Tottenham Hotspur and Leicester City. The midfielder hit opponent Abdul Fatawu's head after a corner kick in the 76th minute and was knocked out, according to media reports
He was treated on the field for several minutes before he was able to sit down and was eventually taken off the field on a stretcher. Photos show that the Uruguayan was bleeding from his head. Caregivers used an oxygen mask.
Players and fans of both teams reacted with shock to the scene. Referee Christopher Kavanagh immediately stopped the game so that Bentancur could receive medical attention. The professionals turned away or clasped their hands above their heads, and the spectators stopped their chants. There was complete silence in the stadium until Bentancur was finally taken away to applause.
“Conscious and speaking”
Even before the final whistle in the 1-1 draw at the start of the Premier League season between the two teams, the all-clear was given cautiously from the sidelines, British newspapers reported. However, Tottenham coach Ange Postecoglou also said after the game: “We have to be very careful. The good news is that he is conscious and speaking.” The medical department now has to take care of the player.
It was Bentancur's first game at the King Power Stadium since he tore his anterior cruciate ligament in February 2023. The injury kept him out of action for eight months.
As a result of Bentancur's injury, a new rule was applied for the first time this season, which has been binding in the Premier League since July 1st after a test phase: If a player is suspected of having a concussion, he must be replaced immediately. The injured player's team receives an additional substitution option.
