The Germans like to eat fish. One or the other kind will end up rarely on the plate in the future – at least if it comes from the Baltic Sea. Because according to the EU Commission, the fishing quotas should decrease for numerous species. The new guidelines will also hit small coastal fishermen.

According to a current proposal by the EU Commission 2025, Fischer should be able to catch less fish in the Baltic Sea. The proposal provides for lower quantities for sprats, salmon and cod, as can be seen from a message.

The fishing quantity of the sprat, for example, is expected to fall around 117,000 tons in the previous year by around 42 percent. Because of the threats of species, the Commission also proposes to significantly shorten the permitted afterlings. At Dorsch in the western Baltic Sea, this should happen by 73 percent, with herring by 50 percent. Only 93 tons of cod and 394 tons of herring would be allowed. Capsals are fish that go to the net undesirable and die frequently. There will also be no exceptions for small coastal fishermen in the coming year. On the other hand, more herring should be able to catch in the Middle Baltic Sea Fischer. The proposal corresponds to an increase of around 108 percent, proposed around 83,900 tons.

The Vice President of the EU Commission, Maros Sefcovic said according to the announcement that he was concerned about the poor condition of the fish stocks in the Baltic Sea. Every year it becomes clearer how important it is to do something against the desolate state of the species important for the economy. According to Brussels, the biodiversity in the Baltic Sea has been under pressure for years due to heavy pollution and long -standing overfishing. Many stocks are threatened.

Every year the Commission develops suggestions on how much fish can be trapped from EU seas. The limitation is intended to prevent stocks from collapsing. Final decided, these quantities are then decided by the Minister of Fishermen in the EU countries -Cem Özdemir is responsible for Germany.

The next time the ministers will deal with the proposal on October 21st and 22nd. The countries are not tied to the scientific recommendations. They regularly decide to fishing quantities that are above the recommendations. The total fishing amount is divided into national odds for the Member States.

The German deep-sea and coastal fishing landed most fish in the state of Bremen in Germany last year, as can be seen from a report by the Federal Agency for Agriculture and Food. Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Schleswig-Holstein and Lower Saxony followed.
