What will change in 2025 for your electricity

    -

There are some innovations coming to the energy supply in the coming year that clever consumers can use to save money.

In 2025, important changes are coming to the electricity supply that will affect consumers. The new regulations affect both the use of smart meters and electricity tariffs.

According to the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Protection (BMWK), the smart meter will only be mandatory for all energy consumers from 2032. However, there are some consumers who will have to have a so-called intelligent electricity meter installed before then. These include:

Households that consume less than 6,000 kilowatt hours per year can wait to install. However, they will then miss out on certain financial benefits, as another change in the electricity sector from 2025 shows.

From 2025, all electricity suppliers will be required to offer dynamic tariffs. This legal regulation benefits consumers because it allows them to shift their electricity consumption to cheaper times when electricity generation is high, explains the BMWK. In order to use the dynamic electricity tariffs, a smart meter must be installed. This allows you to analyze your own consumption behavior and then control it accordingly using an app and smart home devices.

According to the BMWK and the Federal Office for Information Security (BSI), some of the BSI protection profiles and the technical guidelines for smart meters still need to be further developed. The security of the smart meter gateways in particular must be checked by the BSI before installation. And that takes time.

By the way: Experts assume that negative electricity prices will occur more frequently in the future (you can find out more about this here). A dynamic tariff is therefore particularly worthwhile for flexible consumers – even though operating the smart meter involves fees (you can find out more about this here).
