In the future, Ikea customers should be able to sell their discarded Billy shelves and CO on a company-owned portal as well as buy used pieces of furniture and accessories. The second-hand market is already running in two cities, and it is planned worldwide.
Ikea tests its own online marketplace for used IKEA products. By the end of the year, customers in Oslo and Madrid can buy and sell on the Ikea Preowned platform, as the “Financial Times” quotes the company. The aim is therefore to introduce the offer worldwide.
The use of the portal is so far free of charge. The sellers themselves define the price for offered Ikea goods, the platform supports with the help of artificial intelligence (AI) in price finding depending on the age and new value of the products. If you do not have the buyer pay directly, but choose the proceeds in the form of an Ikea voucher, you will receive 15 percent of the trade giant, i.e. a discount on the next purchase. That should attract customers.
Currently on the platform – whose name means “Ikea uses” means – sofas for several hundred euros, but also toilet paper holders for a few euros. The marketplace is part of the corporate transformation towards more online trading and service offers and is also intended to help improve IKEAS climate balance and circular economy. Used products are already buying branches back under certain conditions and selling them on.
