Due to a mild winter, German households recorded lower gas consumption. A Verivox analysis shows differences between the regions.

Last year it was comparatively warm – according to the German Weather Service (DWD), the middle temperature was 10.9 degrees Celsius (+0.3 degrees) in 2024. This is also evident in the heating behavior of many households. In 2024, an average of 6 percent less was heated than in the previous year. Which city was the most economical and how high the consumption was on average shows a current analysis of the comparison portal Verivox. It is based on the data from consumers who have changed their gas supplier via the portal.

On average, 20,744 kilowatt hours (kWh) used owners of gas heating in 2023. 2024 the value was 19,430 kWh – 6 percent less. In addition, the gas price dropped to 11.05 cents in the same period of 13.66 cents/kWh (minus 19 percent). Owners of gas heaters come away significantly better at their heating costs for 2024 than was predicted a year earlier.

The analysis also shows in which federal state was most saved. In Berlin. In 2023, an average of 16,752 kWh was consumed a year. In 2024 there were only 14,835 kWh – a decline of around 11 percent.

A lot was also saved in Saxony-Anhalt. Here the consumption was reduced by 9 percent. In Hamburg, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and Thuringia, the minus was 8 percent each.

The decline was lower in other federal states. In Bremen, consumption fell only by 2 percent, 3 percent in Saarland. Baden-Württemberg and Brandenburg also recorded comparatively moderate savings with 5 percent each.

The analysis is based on the consumption data of all gas providers, which were processed in 2023 and 2024 via the comparison portal Verivox. The determined average gas prices correspond to the household price for gas recorded by Verivox.
