Follow-up for Boniface
DFB is investigating because of stinking fingers in the Supercup
The heated Supercup has consequences for Victor Boniface: The DFB control committee is investigating the Leverkusen player. The reason: He is said to have shown Stuttgarters the middle finger.
The Supercup could have repercussions for striker Victor Boniface from the German double winner Bayer Leverkusen. The German Football Association (DFB) announced that an investigation had been initiated against the 23-year-old. Namely because he is said to have shown the Stuttgart players the middle finger as he ran past after the final whistle. Bayer won the game on Saturday evening against VfB Stuttgart 4-3 on penalties.
According to the DFB, referee Tobias Stieler said when asked that he had not seen this scene, which is why the control committee can subsequently investigate. The suspicion: blatant behavior contrary to sport. “The committee has now written to the striker and asked him to respond promptly,” it said. After the statement has been submitted and evaluated, the control committee will decide on the further progression of the procedure.
Bayer coach Xabi Alonso reacted calmly after the final whistle when asked how he assessed an allegedly unsportsmanlike gesture by his attacker. “I haven't seen it and can't comment on it. But there was this polemic in the last few minutes. That's normal and not a big issue,” the 42-year-old Spaniard explained. The game was hectic and at times chaotic, and at times there were packs forming.
Boniface made it 1-0 for Leverkusen (11th) before Enzo Millot equalized (15th). Boniface was substituted shortly before half-time for tactical reasons after the red card against new signing Martin Terrier. Deniz Undav (63') scored to give Stuttgart the lead just 47 seconds after coming on as a substitute. But as so often in the previous season, Patrik Schick (88th) managed to equalize late. In the penalty shootout, Leverkusen goalkeeper Lukas Hradecky parried against Frans Krätzig, then Silas shot over the goal. Bayer won their first title of the season.
