Dhe cases of domestic violence in Germany have increased significantly in the past year. According to the Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA), the authorities registered 157,550 cases of intimate partner violence, which corresponds to 432 cases per day.
In 2021 there were still 144,044 cases, the increase is 9.4 percent.
Around 80 percent of the victims were women and 78 percent of the suspects were men. 40 percent of the perpetrators were ex-partners, 60 percent current partners.
Federal Interior Minister Nancy Faeser (SPD) called for stricter action in cases of violence in the partnership. “Violent criminals must not be allowed to disappear quickly from the radar. You have to be expelled from the apartment after the first violent attack,” Faeser told the “BamS”. This must also be consistently controlled so that perpetrators do not quickly return. “Everyone affected must be able to feel safe from renewed violence,” she emphasized.
In the area of rape, sexual coercion and sexual assault, the number of cases has even increased by 20 percent in the past year.
Faeser therefore wants to change awareness in society: “No woman should be ashamed of reporting violent criminals. We must help break the silence. Violence against women is not a women’s problem (…) and must not be dismissed as private fate,” said Faeser.
