Where does the term “quiz” come from?
The word “quiz” comes from English. There are different theories about the exact origin of the word. One rather unlikely theory goes back to the Irish theater director Richard Daly. He is said to have bet that he could add a new word to the English language and invented the word “quiz”.
Another theory is that the term comes from the Latin question “Quis es?” (in English: “Who are you?”). The most common theory is that “quiz” is an abbreviation of the English word “question”.
