New logos should bring order to the confusing variety of USB standards. Instead of confusing names such as USB 3.2 Gen 2, cables and connections will in future be clearly marked with the highest possible speed of data transmission and maximum performance.

Since this year, new small devices sold in the EU have had to have USB-C connections. With notebooks, the manufacturers still have time until 2026. This is primarily intended to avoid electronic waste, a simplification is not necessarily associated with this. Because the problem that it is often not possible to recognize which data rates are possible on a connection or which maximum performance it supports is not solved.

This is how the new logos should look like. This is how the new logos should look like.

Names such as USB 3.2 Gen 2 or USB 4 version 2.0 indicate this theoretically, but Otto normal users have to google first to find out the values. Often USB connections are not marked at all, only a look at the manual of a device provides information. The same applies to USB-C cables.

The USB names should actually be clearer since autumn 2022. At that time, the responsible USB Implementor Forum (USB-IP) decided to introduce new logos that indicate the maximum possible speed of data transmission to gigabit per second (GBPS or GBIT/s) and the charging power in watts.

    USB 4 included

According to “PC World”, the USB IF is now going one step further and also includes the latest standard USB 4, of which a version 2 already exists. This is particularly important, because with many current devices, the USB 4 standard is hidden behind a USB-C connection. This can also be a Thunderbolt connection that uses the same protocol, but is certified by Intel without a speed.

There will be a little confusion about USB-C connections and cables in the future. In addition, the manufacturers of computers, chargers or cables still have to implement the guidelines of the USB-IF. If this is the case, you can see USB 80GPS or USB 40GPS instead of USB 4 or USB 4 version 2 on devices or packaging.
