Lightning deficit and penalty trouble
Gladbach counters setbacks with dream goals
After Mainz 05, FC St. Pauli and TSG Hoffenheim, the next Bundesliga club successfully mastered the first round of the cup after initial fears. An early deficit and a missed penalty are no obstacle.
Erzgebirge Aue – Borussia Mönchengladbach 1:3 (1:1)

The Bundesliga soccer team won 3-1 (1-1) at third division club Erzgebirge Aue, meaning the club overcame its opening hurdle for the eleventh time in a row – and after the difficult last season, they were able to look forward to extremely impressive goals right from the start.
Franck Honorat (35th) was successful with an overhead kick, Luca Netz (52nd) hit the corner easily. Alassane Plea later added (70th), and the game was turned around in the second half. Aue shocked the Bundesliga club early with a perfect attack, Mika Clausen gave the hosts the lead in the eighth minute. Immediately before the break, Gladbach's Julian Weigl was denied by Aue captain Martin Männel with a penalty (45+5).

However, Aue was an unpleasant draw for the first competitive game. The Saxons had already played two third division games and won both, and they showed their self-confidence in the first few minutes. The ball came to Kilian Jakob via Borys Tashchy, whose perfect cross was volleyed in by Clausen. After about half an hour, Gladbach found its rhythm, and after Honorat's overhead kick from nine meters, the game went mainly to the hosts' goal.
TSV Schott Mainz – Greuther Fürth 0:2 (0:1)
SpVgg Greuther Fürth lived up to their position as favorites and moved into the 2nd round. The clover leaves won 2-0 (1-0) against fifth division team TSV Schott Mainz. Dennis Srbeny (8th minute) and Marlon Mustapha (82nd) scored the goals in front of 4,235 spectators in the Bruchwegstadion.
The superior guests were lucky because the outsiders had a chance to equalize. The best went to Lennart Thum (19th), who shot over the goal from five meters. Fürth's striker Julian Green hit the post. Green's teammate Jomaine Consbruch was unlucky and had to be substituted injured after a tough start.
Due to the visitors' poor finishing, Mainz believed in their chance until the final whistle and played courageously forward. But Fürth fended off the attacks thanks to his greater cleverness. Mustapha then sealed the elimination of the bravely fighting home team.
