Bayer 04 against VfB Stuttgart
German Supercup causes plenty of trouble
Bayer Leverkusen and VfB Stuttgart play for the first national title of the season in the Supercup. But many fans are very interested in that. In previous years, parts of the active fan scene had always boycotted the duel between master and cup winner.
Trouble about an away game, excitement for an additional English week – and the Ultras don't feel like it anyway: the Supercup heats the mind again. Before it is about the first title of the season, it is diligently discussed as every year. The value of the duel between Double winner Bayer Leverkusen and runner-up VfB Stuttgart is up for debate, the ultra groups of both clubs have made a devastating judgment.
“In our view, the DFL supercup has no sporting appeal as a competition and accordingly no relevance for us, which would justify an organized demeanor,” wrote the Stuttgart Ultra groups. The Leverkusen fan scene has also called for the mood boycott. “Fair's cup instead of cup weekend – not with us,” said the umbrella organization “Nordkurve12 Leverkusen” as a motto.
In previous years, parts of the active fan scene had always boycotted the duel between master and cup winner. One of the reasons is the bad relationship with the organizer. The German Football League (DFL) is almost traditionally viewed by the ultra groups, the Supercup on Saturday (from 8.30 p.m./Sky and Sat.1 as well as in the live ticker at ntv.de) classified as a pure commercial event.
“We are very disappointed with the decision”
Additional resentment stirs up in the first cup round, while Bayer and VfB have to go during the week due to the supercup on August 27 and 28. “The fact that the supercup on the cup weekend on the cup weekend, in our case with the away trip to Münster, has to be contested on Tuesdays, is also difficult,” wrote the VfB supporters.
The Swabians had previously had the choice of the venue. In recent years it has mostly been common for the vice-master to receive home right in the case of the double triumph of an association of runner-up. But the DFL decided differently for the second time in a row. “We are very disappointed with the decision. Stuttgart and VfB deserved this appreciation,” said Alexander Wehrle in early June.
In our view, the Supercup “not in one of the most modern stadiums in Germany with the double capacity of 60,000 places and to make this competition accessible to more football fans is not understandable,” the CEO continued. However, he ensures that “VfB Stuttgart will do everything possible to deny a high-class, sporty-fair finale that we want to win as a athlete”. But just without loud support.
