Slapstick goal crowns HSV's runaway victory, Dresden celebrates coup

Hamburger SV experienced a pleasant cup evening and can warm up for the bigger tasks in the 2nd Bundesliga. League competitor Fortuna Düsseldorf, on the other hand, experiences a nasty surprise.

    SV Meppen – Hamburger SV 1:7 (0:2)

Hamburger SV easily mastered the first task in the DFB Cup and moved into the second round. Coach Steffen Baumgart's team easily won 7:1 (2:0) against fourth division club SV Meppen and hardly had to push their limits. Only Bakery Jatta's injury-related substitution dampened the mood.

After a short start-up time, the second division team controlled the action. Immanuel Pherai (17th) and Miro Muheim (31st) with a direct free kick made things clear after just over half an hour. Another goal by Jatta (41st) did not count due to an alleged offside position.

The Meppen team, who regularly face HSV's second team in the Regionalliga Nord, hardly posed a goal threat. Instead, they mostly ran behind, the technically superior Hamburg team had the game clearly under control.

Nothing changed after the break. Davie Selke (56th), who came on as a substitute for the injured Jatta, was only on the pitch for a few seconds when he scored to make it 3-0. Shortly afterwards, Pherai increased (59'). Meppen's defense was broken: Fabio Balde (71') followed up, and Tim Möller (80') scored a strange own goal: the midfielder chipped the ball back to goalkeeper Julius Pünt, but instead of clarifying the situation with a long shot, Pünt kicked past the ball – and it rolled into the empty goal. Robert Glatzel (87th) made it 7-0, Daniel Haritonov (90th) scored Meppen's consolation goal.

    Dynamo Dresden – Fortuna Dusseldorf 2:0 (1:0)

Last season semi-finalist, this time already failed in the first round: Fortuna Düsseldorf was eliminated from the DFB Cup after a very weak performance. The second division team deservedly lost 0:2 (0:1) to the clearly superior third division team Dynamo Dresden.

Fortuna didn't get into the game at all against their lower class opponents and just trailed behind for half an hour. Robin Meißner missed the first huge chance for Dynamo with a header from a corner (8th), then former Düsseldorf player Christoph Daferner scored (17th) – the Fortuna defense, which had still been undefeated in two league games, always looked unsure in the atmospheric Rudolf Harbig Stadium .

Düsseldorf came out of the break with two great chances, Dynamo goalkeeper Tim Schreiber made brilliant saves against Jona Niemiec and Felix Klaus (46th/48th). Dresden then recovered and had opportunities to decide the game – Meißner completed a counterattack (69').

Fortuna coach Daniel Thioune had previously confirmed to Sky the return of Düsseldorf's record purchase Dawid Kownacki from Werder Bremen. “There are still final details to be clarified, then I can say: Dawid, welcome home,” said Thioune. In 22 Bundesliga appearances for Bremen, the Polish striker had not collected a single scorer point.

    Sportfreunde Lotte – Karlsruher SC 0:5 (0:2)

Karlsruher SC has overcome its first-round trauma in the DFB Cup and safely reached the second round of the competition. The second division soccer team beat the regional league club Sportfreunde Lotte 5-0 (2-0). The Karlsruhe team had previously been eliminated six times in nine first round games, including last year against cup terror 1. FC Saarbrücken.

For the regional league team, which started the championship season with three wins, it was the fifth participation in the main round. The hosts failed four times, including once three years ago against KSC (1:4).

In the stadium at Lotter Kreuz, the guests started the game ideally and took the lead in the second minute through David Herold, who scored from 18 meters. Lotte's goalkeeper Laurenz Beckemeyer didn't cut a good figure. In the 21st minute, Marvin Wanitzek also scored from a distance with a left-footed shot to make it 2-0. An own goal from Johannes Sabah (49th), a goal from Georgian international Budu Zivziwadze (69th) and a goal from Bambase Conte (82nd) sealed the defeat for the hosts.
