Yamal's father emotionally thanks his rescuers after the knife attack

Two days after the knife attack on Lamine Yamal's father, he was able to leave the hospital. Mounir Nasraoui gets off lightly – and speaks emotionally about his rescuers. He owes a lot to one police officer in particular.

The father of Spanish European soccer champion Lamine Yamal, who was injured in a knife attack, has been released from hospital. Mounir Nasraoui thanked his friends and the police officers via Instagram. In particular, his thanks go to “the police officer who treated the wound that bled the most,” wrote Nasraoui: “He held my hand and didn't let go of me so that I wouldn't lose consciousness.”

A total of four people who were said to have been involved in the crime were arrested on Thursday. Yamal's father was stabbed on Wednesday evening in a parking lot in the Catalan city of Mataro, about 30 kilometers north of Barcelona. Those arrested are accused of attempted murder.

Nasraoui reportedly suffered two stab wounds to the abdomen and one to the chest in the attack. He was taken to a hospital in Badalona, a suburb of Barcelona, in critical condition, primarily because of high blood loss, and was initially taken to the intensive care unit there. Yamal visited his father in the hospital on Thursday.

According to reports in the Spanish newspaper La Vanguardia, the attack followed an afternoon dispute in Yamal's Rocafonda district. A child threw water on Yamal's father from a balcony. There was then a scuffle that had to be broken up by the police. Citing the police, La Vanguardia wrote that Nasraoui had stated that those involved in the dispute had set a “trap” for him. They had summoned him to a parking lot to make peace. There they attacked him without warning. It was still unknown why the perpetrators attacked him.

Yamal, who plays for FC Barcelona, won the European Championship title with the Spanish national team. He grew up in Rocafonda, a district of Mataró characterized by immigrants, primarily from Africa. His father comes from Morocco and his mother from Equatorial Guinea. For many children in Rocafonda, Yamal, who is only 17 years old, is a great role model. FC Barcelona posted a picture of Yamal on X with a bicep and heart emoji.
