If you want one of the best current smartphones, you have another option with the Oppo Find X8 Pro. The device shines, among other things, with very high performance, is extremely durable and has excellent cameras.
Most recently, ntv.de reported on an Oppo smartphone, the Find X5 Pro, in spring 2022. The Chinese manufacturer then had to take a forced break due to patent disputes in Germany. These are now included and Oppo is celebrating a fantastic comeback with the Find X8 Pro. In the practical test, the device turns out to be one of the best smartphones currently available, on par with the big guns from Apple, Samsung or Google.
The most striking feature of the Find X8 Pro is the huge round camera unit on the back, with an “H” in the center reminiscent of the cooperation with Hasselblad. It protrudes far from a matt glass surface, which is why the device, which weighs 215 grams, is around twelve millimeters thick. Otherwise it is just under 8.3 millimeters thin. Because the sides and back are matte, the smartphone feels very good overall and sits securely in the hand.
Extra camera button
As with the predecessors of the Find X8 Pro, you will find a slider at the top left of the frame with which you can quickly switch between Ring, Silently and Vibrate can change. It has a non-slip surface and is easy to feel. However, you have to get used to the new touch-sensitive shortcut button on the right side. It sits flat in the frame and has a matt surface.
There's a good reason why it isn't grooved, because you can use it to quickly open the camera app with just a double press and then use it as a shutter button. By swiping your finger over it, it is possible to zoom without spreading the touchscreen.
Great display, high performance
The OLED screen of the Find X8 Pro, which is dust- and waterproof to IP 69, is at the highest level. It has a screen diagonal of 6.8 inches, is crisp with 480 pixels per inch (ppi) and delivers excellent contrast and colors. It can also shine brightly if necessary and offers a variable refresh rate from 1 to 120 Hertz (Hz). The integrated fingerprint sensor works precisely.
The device is powered by the MediaTek Dimensity 9400, which has 16 gigabytes (GB) of RAM (LPDDR5X). The flash memory (UFS 4.0) is 512 GB. With the chip, the Taiwanese manufacturer shows that it is now on a par with Qualcomm. In all common benchmark tests, the Find X8 Pro is at the forefront, in some cases even the leader.
In the 3DMark Wildlife Extreme, which is relevant for gaming performance, for example, the Oppo Find X8 Pro is at the top with almost 6400 points. It also delivered strong performance in Geekbench 6 with one or all eight cores (2163/7331) of the main processor (CPU).
AI fun mostly only online
There is still some catching up to do when it comes to AI applications; here the Chinese smartphone cannot quite keep up with the top devices, especially the iPhone 16 Pro (Max). Therefore, most of the corresponding functions take place in the cloud and not on the device. So, among other things, you have to upload photos to Oppo's servers. Other things, such as having texts optimized or transcribing and summarizing voice recordings, do not yet work in German.
If you're willing to upload your data to the servers, the models running there do a good job. For example, it works with photos Remove glare excellent, eliminating reflections when photographing through glass. That's fun too AI Studiowhere you can upload portraits and have them modified. Among other things, you can transform yourself into a cowboy or disco god.
Strong quadruple camera
Speaking of photos: The quadruple camera on the back lives up to its promise. The main camera (wide angle) takes excellent photos with great colors and contrasts as well as lots of details during the day with up to 50 megapixels (MP), aperture f/1.6 and optical image stabilization. It can also impress at night, and its use of light sources is particularly impressive. It is also capable of taking high-quality macro shots.
The videos from the main camera are also great, with recordings possible with a resolution of up to 4K and refresh rates of up to 60 frames per second (fps). Among other things, the handling of changing lighting conditions and the effective image stabilization are pleasing. The ultra-wide-angle camera (50 MP/f2.0) is almost as good. What's great about your photos is that they're still sharp on the sides too.
There are also two telephoto cameras (f/2.6/4.3/OIS/50 MP) with three times and six times optical magnification. Even beyond this, they still deliver sharp images with lots of details; the photos only start to blur at around 30x magnification.
Excellent endurance
You don't have to worry that excessive use of the cameras could quickly drain the battery. The silicon-carbon battery of the Find With normal use, you can sometimes get by without a power outlet the next day until you go to bed at night.
The good reception of the Oppo Find X8 Pro in 5G and LTE networks is also commendable. Otherwise, the smartphone is up to date in terms of wireless standards with Wifi 7 and Bluetooth 5.4. This also applies to the Android 15 operating system, which receives updates for five years, and security patches are available for at least a year longer.
Conclusion
The Oppo Find X8 Pro is one of the best smartphones you can buy. Its hardware and software are top-notch in almost every respect, and it doesn't have any real weaknesses. However, with a recommended retail price of just under 1200 euros, it is similarly expensive as the top competition, but far less well known. Despite a more than successful comeback, it could be difficult for the Chinese to assert themselves on the German market, where the Find X8 Pro is expected to be available from January.
