New first-person shooters and action-adventures dominate Xbox. The console manufacturer is building anticipation for fantastic-looking video games. But gamers will have to be patient.
At the Xbox Showcase, the console manufacturer is taking a look into the future of video games and wants to build anticipation for the coming months. One focus is primarily on the availability of many titles via Game Pass – the monthly subscription to Xbox. The acquisitions of development studios such as Activision Blizzard and Bethesda, which presented strong titles, are slowly paying off. But smaller studios also provide highlights at the presentation. There is one small disadvantage, however: many of the fan favorites will not be released until next year.
One of the games that are released regularly is “Call of Duty”, which is presenting a new campaign with “Black Ops 6” that is set in the 1990s after the collapse of the Soviet Union. The first-person shooter from Activision promises an “epic spy thriller”. The images shown in the trailer and in the subsequent deep dive focus more on special forces, chaotic firefights and, of course, lots of explosions. At least fans of the series don't have to wait too long, the game is already being released on October 25th.
The titles that were presented in the Los Angeles auditorium, which consisted of press, developers and influencers But the games that sparked such a storm of enthusiasm were different. With “Doom: The Dark Ages”, an iconic and equally brutal first-person shooter is back. This time, monsters and demons are being taken on in a medieval setting with various modified weapons. While the last title from 2020 was developed for older console generations, the latest work from Id Software is something for Xbox Series X|S and also the Playstation 5 – but not until 2025.
This concluded the shooter section, and action adventures then took up a larger part of the showcase event. “South of Midnight” looked impressive. In addition to in-game video sequences of the comic-like third-person title, the first gameplay passages were also shown. The protagonist fights her way through damp swamp landscapes and has to deal with magical alligators and catfish. The title is included in the Xbox Game Pass for Xbox Series X | S and PC and will be released next year.
New scenes from “Fable” were also shown for the first time with gameplay impressions. The fairytale-like fantasy adventure will not be released until 2025, but should set itself apart from the grey mass of action adventures with its humorous staging and quirky characters such as giant toads.
There is hardly a more adventurous game than “Indiana Jones”. The title is due to be released for the Xbox sometime this year, and the scenes shown from the game “Indiana Jones and the Great Circle” had a real cinematic feel. The researcher with the whip and the snappy sayings has to deal with the Nazis again while searching for relics. The gameplay sequences shown by Bethesda were from the first-person perspective – accordingly, the young virtual Harrison Ford as “Indy” will probably only be seen in cutscenes.
In addition, Xbox also had a number of expansions for existing titles in store. “World of Warcraft” will get its “The War Within” DLC on August 26th, and the space saga “Starfield” will have even more content for gamers with “Shattered Space” at least this year. “Fallout 76” and “Diablo IV” will also get add-ons.
