The singer died after falling from a hotel balcony. The authorities have ruled out suicide. Instead, the investigation goes in a different direction.
In mid-October, the news of the death of British musician Liam Payne caused shock around the world. The former member of the band One Direction died at the age of 31 after falling from the balcony of a hotel in Buenos Aires. The exact circumstances are still unclear and investigations have been initiated.
An initial autopsy revealed that the singer had succumbed to his serious injuries on site. During toxicological tests, various substances were found in Liam Payne's blood. Among other things, before his death he had consumed so-called “pink cocaine” – a drug mix that includes ketamine and methamphetamine. Ecstasy and crack as well as a prescription antidepressant were also detected.
Investigators have ruled out suicide. Because of his drug use, he was not fully conscious, the prosecutor said. Because of his condition, he neither knew what he was doing nor could he understand the consequences of his actions. A toxicological examination is said to have shown that he did not take a reflexive position during the fall to protect himself, as “E! News” writes with reference to a police report.
Everything indicates that the One Direction star fell from the balcony while intoxicated. Video footage from hotel security cameras is said to show Liam Payne fainting and then tragically falling over the parapet. Three men who have now been arrested are said to be complicit in this.
Two of the suspects are said to have supplied the 31-year-old with drugs, including a hotel employee. The other defendant was a constant companion of Payne in Buenos Aires. He is accused of so-called abandonment resulting in death – which means that he abandoned the singer in a helpless situation.
According to prosecutors, Liam Payne may have been in a drug-induced “psychotic episode” at the time of his death. It was no secret that he had addiction problems in the past. The musician spoke openly about it, but was recently considered clean. His body has now been released and returned from Argentina to his native Great Britain.
