Manuel Neuer's decision about his DFB career is approaching

Two great German footballers ended their national team careers around the home European Championship. Will Manuel Neuer follow? DFB sports director Rudi Völler announces when the goalkeeper will make a decision. And that will be soon.

DFB sports director Rudi Völler has announced an early decision on the future of Manuel Neuer in the national football team. “It will certainly be before the nomination, which will be the week after next, by then there will be a decision regarding Manuel,” said Völler in the Sport1 “double pass”. Völler also explained that Neuer himself would speak first. The 2014 world champion goalkeeper deserved to “have the first serve himself as to what happens next.”

In contrast to the two 34-year-olds, Toni Kroos and Thomas Müller, who announced their resignation from the DFB selection before and after the home European Championships in the summer, the 38-year-old Neuer has not yet made any decisive statements. Kroos ended his career completely, Müller only plays for FC Bayern.

Neuer's contract with Munich runs until the end of June 2025. After his serious leg injury, he has long been the regular goalkeeper again. Völler once again called Neuer a “world-class” goalkeeper, but also mentioned his previous deputy, Marc-André ter Stegen from FC Barcelona.

The DFB sports director said that national coach Julian Nagelsmann had the final say, that was “the power” of the coach. The national coach had ruled out another major personnel change immediately after the European Championship exit. Nagelsmann will gather the national team in Herzogenaurach on Monday, September 2nd. The German team lived and trained there at the European Championships. The DFB announced that the squad would be announced the week before.

In the Nations League, the German team will face European Championship group opponents Hungary at the start in Düsseldorf on September 6th. Three days later there will be the top game in Group 3 in Amsterdam against the Netherlands. The other group opponent is Bosnia-Herzegovina.
