The musician played his last concerts last year on a major tour. And that will remain the case, as Elton John has now made clear.
He is considered one of the greatest music stars of our time. But in 2019, Elton John announced that he would be retiring from the stage after more than 50 years in show business and over 450 million albums sold. Shortly afterwards, his last concert tour began with the “Farewell Yellow Brick Road Tour”. Then the Corona pandemic thwarted these plans, which is why the performances ultimately dragged on until last year.
The grand finale took place in July 2023, which the 77-year-old musician now reviewed once again alongside his husband David Furnish. “At the last show in Stockholm on the farewell tour to Glastonbury, I got in the car and said: 'Yes! Yes!'” Elton John recalls in an interview with “Entertainment Tonight”. “We left at the peak, just like I wanted,” he says, making it clear: “And after that there was no turning back!”
That's why he gave a clear “no” when asked whether he could imagine giving concerts again. “He did that for almost 60 years,” his husband added. So it's nice to finally be able to spend more time at home with the family.
Elton John gave this as the reason for ending his career. He wanted to devote himself entirely to his private life. “We have our sons, you know, they are now entering their teenage years,” explained David Furnish, referring to the couple's two children.
Zachary, 13, and Elijah, two years younger, were carried by a surrogate mother. “I think it's a key decade in a child's life and we don't want to miss anything. We want to be there,” said the Canadian film producer.
