Weatherproof plants for balconies, gardens and terraces at a glance

    -

The weather is becoming increasingly crazy and weather-resistant plants are in greater demand than ever. We present species that can easily withstand extreme conditions.

Summer, sun – and suddenly a storm comes. The weather is particularly unpredictable this year. Hobby gardeners are rightly wondering which plants should be planted on their balcony or garden. They have to be fairly weatherproof and be able to withstand blazing sun, falling temperatures and heavy rain at the same time.

Fortunately, there are some plants and woods that are robust and can easily withstand extreme weather conditions. Whether it's wind, heavy rain or long dry periods – these four species still thrive in your home garden.

Even if the ornamental shrub looks delicate, lilac is quite robust. Although it loves a location in full sun, it can also grow in partial shade if necessary. Temperatures of up to minus 30 degrees hardly affect the beautiful flowers. The lilac's deep root system also protects the plant from strong winds and dry periods. This allows it to reach water deep in the ground. But lilac can also cope well with heavy rain and flooding for a while. It can thrive both as a shrub in the garden and as a pot plant on the balcony.

The spring tamarisk needs a little more space and is therefore not suitable for the balcony. With a height of two to three meters, it also fits into smaller gardens, where its pink flowers provide a splash of color. Its deep root system means it is well equipped to withstand gusts of wind. This also protects the tamarisk from long dry periods. The shrub feels most comfortable in a sunny to partially shaded location, but it is very adaptable. In the event of flooding, the spring tamarisk is long-lived and can quickly absorb oxygen again with its additional roots that grow on the surface.

The strawberry tree is suitable as a potted plant on the balcony or terrace as well as in the garden. Although its roots grow flat, it can withstand strong winds well. The root system also ensures that the tree with the red fruits can recover quickly even in floods and heavy rain. It grows best in a sunny to partially shaded location. Its leathery leaves prevent excessive water loss even in dry periods. By the way: The red fruits, which are reminiscent of a mixture of strawberry and lychee, are edible. They can be harvested in autumn and have a sweet and sour taste.

The Chinese hemp palm is amazingly robust. Originally from Asia, it also thrives here and can withstand temperatures of up to minus 17 degrees. For longer periods of time, however, it likes it sunny, warm and, above all, humid. Hemp palms love water and can therefore cope very well with a lot of rain. Waterlogging is not usually a problem. The palm only reacts somewhat allergically to wind. It is therefore better to plant it in a sheltered location in the garden or on the balcony.
