Shortly before the end of the year, Stiftung Warentest checks two current top notebooks. One of the two devices enthusiastically call “the best computer we have ever tested”.
When Stiftung Warentest recently tested new notebooks, it was noticed that the current MacBook Pro with M4 chip was missing. The examiners have now made up for this and chose two variants of Apple's racing cars to the new leaders who replace their predecessors. The larger device even declares Warentest the “best computer that we have ever tested”.
MacBook Pro models with 14 and 16-inch screens were checked in the cheapest configurations with 512 gigabytes (GB) Large SSD and 16 or 24 GB RAM.
However, the devices are therefore not inexpensive. For the laptop with a 14-inch display, the examiners determined an average online price of 1850 euros, for the 16-incher buyers even have to scan almost 2660 euros.
The biggest difference to the predecessors makes Apple's new M4 chips that drive the MacBook ProS. The large model is equipped with a stronger variant, the central processor (CPU) 14 and the graphics unit (GPU) has 20 computing cores. The M4 of the 14-inch player has ten kernels each.
The higher computing power was shown not only in benchmark tests, but also in everyday tasks such as opening files and installation of programs, the auditors write. This also applies to the graphics performance, which is necessary for elaborate video editing or demanding games, among other things. Here the large MacBook Pro is even “the very first device that, according to our current, significantly tightened test program, reached the grade 'very good'”.
Despite the higher performance, the new MacBook Pro duo is even more persistent than the predominantly good predecessors in this category. The 16-inch model lasted for around two hours longer when playing videos and internet surfing, the small MacBook Pro M4 also exceeds the M3 variant. Empty batteries are fully charged again in about two hours.
The screens of the previous year's models have already been rated very well (1.5), the new mini-LED displays are even better. This is particularly evident in rapid response times when building image, where they could keep up with OLED panels, the goods testers write.
