Shock for fans and players
Serious injury overshadows Premier League start
Only a few minutes have been played in the Premier League game between Nottingham Forest and AFC Bournemouth when a nasty incident causes shocked faces: Forest professional Danilo breaks his ankle. Fans and players of both teams suffer too.
Football professional Danilo from Nottingham Forest seriously injured his left leg in the Premier League opener against Bournemouth. In the seventh minute, in a duel with Bournemouth striker Antoine Semenyo, the Brazilian landed awkwardly on the ground, his ankle twisted and as a result Danilo's foot visibly stuck out unnaturally.
The referee and his teammates immediately called for help when they saw Danilo's condition. Many players standing near the event averted their gaze in horror or pulled their jerseys over their shocked faces.
A privacy screen was set up around the midfielder while medical staff attended to Danilo. After almost six minutes of treatment, the 23-year-old was carried off the pitch to applause from fans of both teams. Opponent Semenyo was also briefly treated, but was then able to continue playing – with consequences for Nottingham: The Ghanaian international scored in the 86th minute to make the final score 1-1. Chris Wood had given Forest the lead in the 23rd minute.
Nottingham coach Nuno Espirito Santo said, according to Sky News: “It was a terrible moment for everyone, it's very serious.” Accordingly, Danilo broke his ankle. “We will miss him, not just on the field, he is a wonderful boy.” However, an exact diagnosis is still pending. “It's not nice when a team-mate goes down on the pitch like that,” team-mate Chris Wood told BBC Radio 5 Live. He assured his teammate of full support for his recovery. “Whatever it is, he will come back stronger and a better person.”
