“Nowadays, however, partner changes are common”

    -

Thomas and Lisa Müller became a couple when they were young. According to a psychologist, doubts often arise one day in teenage love.

There has been speculation for months about a marriage crisis between Thomas and Lisa Müller. The fact that the footballer has now unfollowed his wife on Instagram fueled the rumors even further. The dressage rider had already banned him from her subscriber list at the beginning of May and deleted photos of the couple. The two of them will soon have an anniversary coming up, their 15th wedding anniversary. They tied the knot in November 2009. They officially started dating two years earlier when they were teenagers. As couples therapist Christian Hemschemeier explains in an interview with t-online, childhood love does not mean that a relationship will last, even if it has a reputation.

“Teenage love is considered the gold standard among footballers because it is said that women you get together with later are often just looking for fame,” says the qualified psychologist, but dispels this belief: “Couples who got together at a young age may have worked well in the past, but these days changing partners is common.”

In general, couples who got together very early, perhaps had sex together for the first time, and married early, would eventually have doubts about the relationship. “The thirties, in which Thomas and Lisa Müller find themselves now, are a typical time of crisis for teenage couples. Many people think: 'Was that all? Shouldn't I try something else?'” says Hemschemeier.

Thomas Müller's former FC Bayern and DFB colleague Mats Hummel and his ex-wife Cathy Hummels were also very young, only 19 years old, when they became a couple in 2007. They tied the knot in 2015, but the marriage didn't last a lifetime. The two, who have a son named Ludwig, have been divorced since 2022. Cathy Hummels recently spoke to Pierre M. Krause on the SWR program “Krause Comes” about the dark side of a player's wife's life. She was “always just 'the wife of'” and no one knew her name.

Jealousy also apparently played a role. “The more prominent Mats became, I thought: 'What does he want with you?'” the presenter shared her thoughts from back then in the interview. It's difficult when your partner is a world star “and supermodels write to him.” You have to be self-confident and say to yourself: “Okay, I am someone too and I can keep up.” Does Lisa Müller know similar feelings? She also indicated that, in her eyes, she was defined too much by her husband. When RTL asked her about Thomas Müller unfollowing her on Instagram, she replied: “I'm not an appendage and I'm not a handbag of his.”
