If everything goes smoothly, this vacuum robot is the best choice

    -

The Dreame If everything goes smoothly, the luxury household helper cleans really well.

Vacuum robots can be extremely practical and relieve users of a lot of housework. However, they often leave dirt behind because they cannot reach every corner of the apartment. In addition to corners and edges, high thresholds and low furniture in particular prevent them from doing their job completely. The brand new vacuum-mopping robot Dreame X50 Ultra Complete shouldn't be stopped by such obstacles. ntv.de tested whether that was true.

    Complete with station

The X50 Ultra can rightly be called “Complete” not only because of the many accessories it comes with. Because it comes with a base station where the robot is maintained and supplied. All you have to do is change the vacuum cleaner bag occasionally, empty the dirty water and refill it with fresh water and cleaning products. The station can do the rest, including mob cleaning and drying, independently if desired. Even the platform on which the X50 Ultra is parked cleans it when necessary.

This worked wonderfully in more than a month of practical testing; it was only very rarely possible to remove small residual dirt. If necessary, you have the option of making settings yourself, for example determining the amount and temperature of water for mob cleaning. In addition, UV light in the station is supposed to kill bacteria.

Nobody is climbing higher at the moment

This is impressive, but not new. What is new, however, is that the robot has extendable legs with wheels with which it can overcome doorsteps and similar obstacles with heights of up to 4.2 centimeters. If they are set up in steps like patio doors, it can even reach six centimeters.

To get under low furniture, he can also retract his tower, which houses the lidar sensor that he uses to orient himself and measure rooms. In this mode, he orientates himself using his camera in addition to the saved map and switches on a bright headlight in the dark.

    Good mapping

Before you can try out these functions, the robot must first map the apartment. To do this, he moves over them and, in addition to the dimensions, also registers obstacles and, using a downward-pointing camera, the condition of the ground.

This takes a while, but the maps created are fairly accurate and the X50 Ultra reliably detects whether it is rolling over hard floors or carpets. You can then readjust in the app. This is necessary, among other things, if the robot has recognized an obstacle as insurmountable even though it could actually climb over it. Conversely, it can also happen that he overestimates himself or wants to reach areas that he should actually avoid.

Unknown obstacles that the robot encounters later usually do not pose any problems. If you move furniture, it adjusts its route, and it usually reliably avoids pets or objects such as socks or toys.

However, he occasionally had difficulties with small things like cutlery during the test and pushed them along. Cables also caused him problems, especially when they were under furniture and he could only use his camera to detect them.

    Strong climbing performance

When it comes to climbing and ducking, the Dreame X50 Ultra delivered 100 percent. He was unable to overcome the thresholds of the old apartment that needed to be cleaned, some of which were more than 8 centimeters high. But after reducing it to just over 4 centimeters using a homemade ramp, he climbed over it with no problem.

Since the front of the bike hits the ground after crossing an obstacle, the bike has a shock absorber there. In this way, the robot not only avoids damage, but also makes relatively little noise when climbing.

The X50 Ultra measures to the millimeter whether it fits under furniture; the robot is 8.9 centimeters high with the tower retracted. But that doesn't always work out well. In the test, for example, an uneven floorboard caused the robot to get stuck under a shelf. This can also be corrected later on the map.

    Excellent on smooth floors

The test showed light and shadow when it came to cleaning performance. The X50 Ultra shined on smooth floors. It not only vacuumed up dust, but also completely vacuumed up rice, hair and other items that ntv.de had distributed. He also thoroughly cleaned corners and edges using an extendable, rotating brush.

He was equally good at mopping floors in difficult-to-reach angles by extending one of the two mob disks. In automatic mode, it metered the amount of water well and reliably removed light dirt.

Like other robots, the Dreame X50 Ultra has difficulties with dried, viscous liquids such as sauces, ketchup or mustard. Even though he ran over them several times, the remains stuck to the ground. However, it didn't leave coffee stains behind.

    Edge problems on carpets

Despite a suction power of up to 20,000 Pascals, the X50 Ultra was weak on carpets. Robots usually have a bad hand on long-pile carpets anyway, but the robot also had difficulties with short-pile carpets in the test. This doesn't affect his basic performance.

From a mixture of dust, lint, hair and rice, it left only a few stubborn lint fibers behind, which can also pose serious problems for hand-held vacuum cleaners. The performance was set to “Turbo”, one step above “Standard”. In “Max” mode, the robot might have completely removed the lint.

The problem is corners and edges. Because the extendable brush remains inactive on carpets. The X50 Ultra left practically all grains of rice placed on a rubbing strip behind – even those that were a few centimeters away. This makes sense for cozy carpets, as the brush could get tangled there. However, there is no danger on short-pile surfaces. So it would be good if Dreame brought the ability to activate the brush for carpet cleaning into the app with an update.

    Successful interplay, practical extras

Otherwise, the X50 Ultra does a great job when it comes to alternating between vacuuming and wiping. If necessary, it automatically lifts the magnetically attached mobs or temporarily places them in the station. On the way back from a job or when mopping, it also tightens the brush rollers or alone. These, in turn, rarely have to be removed from long hair. The combination of two rubber brushes with and without bristles proves to be very effective here. If you do need to clean them, they can be easily removed.

In the very extensive but still clear app you will find numerous other extras that you can use if you want. There is a solid in-house voice control, but it currently only works in English. You can use it, for example, to send the robot into individual rooms or have a mess removed from a specific location. Alternatively, you can use the assistants from Amazon or Google.

Dreame also offers the ability to use the camera to view real-time images on the smartphone. You can even talk to people present from a distance. To do this, you must agree to temporarily store your personal data on the Chinese manufacturer's servers. The robot can also send photos of pets or obstacles.

The mileage is impeccable; the X50 Ultra can normally cover around 100 square meters with one battery charge. If it only vacuums in standard mode, there is a lot more in it, but if it has to vacuum and wipe intensively, it can sometimes be less. If necessary, he takes a break and refuels at the station. An empty battery can be recharged in about four hours.

    Conclusion

The Dreame X50 Ultra Complete is currently unbeatable as a climbing expert, and the retractable laser tower also significantly extends the robot's range. You hardly have to worry about maintenance, but you have many options for adapting the cleaning.

The suction power is excellent on smooth floors, but the robot is weak on carpets, especially in corners and edges. In order for the price, currently around 1,400 euros, to be worthwhile, the conditions for the X50 Ultra must be ideal. Otherwise, you can find cheaper options to have the apartment vacuumed and mopped automatically.
