Elon Musk admits cheating in video games

    -

The question of whether Elon Musk cheated in several video games was the number one topic in many gaming communities for days. Now the Tesla boss comments on the allegations and admits that someone else played on his account. He also gives a reason for this.

It was a debate that caused quite a stir in the gaming scene and beyond. Well-known American YouTubers published videos that were viewed millions of times every day, and even some large German media reported. The question at the center of the debate: Did Elon Musk, self-proclaimed video game professional, pay other people to play games so that he could present himself as one of the world's best in the action role-playing game “Path of Exile 2”? Now the Tesla boss commented on the allegations. With Musk's consent, the YouTuber “NikoWrex” published private messages between the two in which the tech billionaire admitted some of the allegations.

When the YouTuber asked if he had ever let someone else play on his accounts to increase his level and bought equipment and resources with real money, Musk responded affirmatively with an emoji. Otherwise it would be “impossible to beat players in Asia,” explained the Tesla boss, who has built up an image as a video game genius in various podcasts. That's common there. So-called account sharing, as Musk has admitted, is prohibited in the game and is punished with a penalty that extends to the account being blocked. The concept of this highly complex game involves defeating opponents and leveling up particularly efficiently and in a time-saving manner.

    The critics are not convinced

Asked whether his intention was to take credit for someone else's skills, Musk replied: “No.” He never explicitly claimed to use the account alone. The tech billionaire asserted that he always played himself on streams or in videos of his gameplay that he uploaded to X.

Musk's argument did not convince his critics. “Let’s be honest,” said Twitch streamer “Asmongold,” whose videos on the topic have been viewed millions of times: “I think a lot of people came to the conclusion that he himself because of the way he talked about it played.” Streamer Quinn “Quin69” Crawford, whose video sparked the discussion, rejected Musk's claim that account sharing is necessary to reach the top of the world. “These are lies. Almost all players who are at the top of the rankings stream their gameplay.” This would make it harder to cheat since there is video footage of all game progress.

Musk published private messages on X

In the days following the first videos questioning Musk's abilities as a gamer, he joined the discussion himself. Successful and famous content creators like “Asmongold” publicly criticized the tech billionaire for his attempts at deception. Musk then removed the blue verification tick on X from the Twitch streamer, unfollowed him and published private messages between the two that were intended to discredit “Asmongold”.

Musk interpreted his reference to his “editors” to mean that the streamer was being told by a third party what he was allowed to say and what not. Musk didn't seem to know that the term “editor” is usually used in the scene for editors, i.e. the people who cut and edit the YouTube videos. After mostly negative feedback, the Tesla boss deleted the images.

By the way, the game mode in which Musk was brought to the top by other players is the so-called “hardcore mode”. Anyone who dies in this mode loses their character forever and has to start over. Musk's character died about a week ago – Musk didn't say anything about whether he was sitting in front of the screen or whether it was someone else.
