The Nature Conservation Association Germany e. V. has announced which local bird species is the “Bird of the Year” for 2025.
Bird lovers had until October 10th at 10 a.m. to vote on who they would consider to be their “Bird of the Year” for 2025. Now the winner has been determined. It's the black redstart.
The black redstart (Phoenicurus ochruros) is a species of songbird that is originally native to the mountains. However, the shy passerine bird has now also settled in human settlements.
In addition to its red-colored tail, the bird is particularly noticeable for its morning song.
This means that the winner has prevailed over the other candidates. The following birds were also available:
With the “Bird of the Year” campaign, the Nature Conservation Association of Germany (Nabu) and the State Association for Bird and Nature Conservation in Bavaria (LBV) would like to draw attention to endangered bird species. In addition to the species, the threat can also affect its habitat – as is the case this year.
The bird species that were on the ballot this year are not considered endangered. However, this does not apply to their habitat. This is threatened due to human intervention in nature.
